One of the most important, and most overlooked, pieces of information on a nutrition label is the serving size, located at the top of the label. Notice, serving size is almost always measured in both volume (i.e. 2/3 cup) and weight (i.e. 55g). Next on the nutrition label is calories per serving, followed by macro- and micronutrient information. Remember that carbohydrates and protein yield 4 calories per gram, and fat yields 9 calories per gram. Given this information, a food that has 8g of fat, 37g of carbohydrates, and 3g of protein would yield about 232 calories. [(8g x 9kcal) + (37g x 4kcal) + (3g x 4kcal)]. *The FDA allows companies to round up or down to the nearest 10 calories, which is why macros sometimes won’t add up to the exact number of calories.</image:caption>
